Question on 2's Complement

Postby sekarmpms » Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:46 pm

Hello,

I have question on digital electronics.

can anyone explain me how the 2's complement of a positve binary number will be a negative number of its same value.

In one of the book i saw one statement that 2's complement of the 0011(decimal +3) is 1101 (decimal -3). its clear for me that 2's complement of 0011 is 1101. but i am not clear how come 1101 is equilent to decimal value of -3. it should be equal to 13 if we consider it has unsinged number or it should be equal to -5(1 MSB representce negative value and remaining 101 equals decimal value 5) if we consider it has singed number.

Please explain me if you see the question is appropriate or correct me if i am anywhere wrong.

Regards
sekar

The MSB 1 in 1101 do stand for sign. But does not mean that it is -101. But the value as such represents -3.

ie you derive the value of the binary number in the following way

-1 X 2^3 = -8
1 X 2^2 = 4
0 X 2^1 = 0
1 X 2^0 = 1
Sum ===> -3

ie value of MSB is taken in negative sense rather than considering it as a sign bit.

Hope this answers your question
