Are Tiny Homes The Best Answers For Housing Crisis in Mumbai

More than 1 billion people around the world lack decent shelter. Of these, the majority live in urban areas, usually in slums and informal settlements. The world’s megacities like Mumbai where more than 22 million live in the metropolitan region have to find a way to provide housing that is both affordable and does the minimum possible amount of harm to the environment. Housing builders are realising that small is more & are trying to come up with a possible solution i.e micro houses. There is currently no definition for a microhouse; it can be a tiny home on wheels that looks like a garden shed or a slightly larger brick-and-mortar house with flexible interior layouts, what is common among the designs is a priority on making the most out of what limited space is available.

As soon as developers can figure out how best to both construct and market these micro homes there is sure to be a rapid increase in their production. A lot of people have an idea in their head that a home needs to be a certain size or their family might not have a comfortable lifestyle. These latest designs prove that under one tiny roof, you can find everything you need to have a high standard of home living. Tiny houses don’t suit all demographics, but the increasing interest shows that local governments need to seriously consider allowing tiny houses in urban areas. They have significant potential to be a catalyst for infill development, either as tiny house villages, or by relaxing planning schemes to allow owners and tenants to situate well-designed tiny houses on suburban lots.
